Finance Minister Andrian Gavrilita says that education trade unions are justified in demanding higher teachers salaries, but the current budget situation does not allow the government to meet these demands without financial risks. According to the official, accepting the requests now would mean paying salaries on credit, BANI.MD reports.

“The unions requests for salary increases are legitimate. We held several consultations with the unions at the ministry. I hope that for the 2027 budget we will have much more inclusive consultations and more dialogue. I took office on November 1, and in a very short time we had to prepare both the budget revision and the 2026 budget,” the minister said during a program on Moldova 1.

Gavrilita explained that the ministry discussed the issue with union representatives, but current budget constraints do not allow salary increases without borrowing.

“We discussed this with the unions, and our colleagues understood our position. Granting these increases today would mean doing so on credit. It would be wrong toward them to borrow from the market just to fund these increases,” he stressed.

According to the cited source, the minister reaffirmed the governments commitment to reforming the public sector pay system through a new law.

“We are committed to adopting a new wage law by January 2027. We will do everything possible to have it ready earlier. We hope it will enter into force on September 1. The new wage law will correct the pay principles. Over the next few years, we aim to reduce the number of reference values from ten to four,” Andrian Gavrilita specified.

Educational institutions across the country are organizing today, December 16, an awareness and union pressure action under the slogan “Dignity for Education – Solidarity for a Fair Future.” The action takes place while parliamentary committees discuss the draft Budget Law, as teachers and employees in education and research demand urgent solutions from the government to the problems in the system.
