Chisinau authorities are preparing measures to prevent individuals convicted in the Republic of Moldova from leaving the country through the Transnistrian region, Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin said.

Authorities have already set up a working group that includes representatives of the Prosecutor General Office. The group is identifying legislative solutions to prevent such cases.

“I do not want to anticipate anything, because the working group is still at a conceptual stage. After we finalize the proposals, we will organize public consultations to involve as many interested stakeholders as possible,” Daniella Misail-Nichitin said.

Several individuals convicted in high profile cases remain missing, including former MPs Alexandr Nesterovschi and Irina Lozova, former police chief Alexandru Pinzari, and the former president of the People Assembly of Gagauzia. Moldovan courts sentenced them, and authorities presume that they may have left the country through the Transnistrian region or may be located in territory under unconstitutional control.
