Moldova and Greece Explore Energy Cooperation and Vertical Gas Corridor Expansion

Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu and Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou discussed economic cooperation opportunities, particularly in the energy sector, and ways to enhance the use of the Vertical Gas Corridor.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the talks covered energy efficiency in buildings, renewable energy development, and support for adopting EU energy regulations.

Greek Investments in Renewable Energy and Hydrogen

Chatzivasileiou expressed Greek companies’ interest in investing in Moldova’s renewable energy sector and collaborating on hydrogen projects.

Junghietu thanked Greece for its support in piloting the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal and expressed interest in continuing its use to diversify Moldova’s natural gas supply.

In April 2024, Moldova’s Energocom was among the first beneficiaries of LNG transported through the Vertical Corridor, storing it in Ukraine’s underground facilities.

Strategic Energy Security in the Region

Chatzivasileiou emphasized the LNG terminal’s geopolitical significance, highlighting its role in regional energy security. He reaffirmed Greece’s support for Moldova’s 2024 accession to the Vertical Gas Corridor alongside Ukraine and Slovakia.
