Moldova and the United Kingdom signed a Defence and Security Partnership and an Agreement on the Readmission of Persons in Illegal Stay. The signing ceremony, held in Chisinau, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi and the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy.
On the same day, Romania’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Luminița Odobescu, visited Chișinău for trilateral discussions with her Moldovan and British counterparts.
Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi emphasized the importance of the trilateral format, noting the strong support from Romania and the United Kingdom for Moldova’s democracy and development.
“I thanked our partners for their support, particularly for signing these two significant agreements. The bilateral partnership in the security sector will enhance dialogue and cooperation on regional security, resilience against hybrid threats, and operational-level collaboration. The Readmission Agreement aligns with international standards to combat illegal migration while fully respecting human rights. It ensures the safe return of Moldovan citizens residing illegally in the UK and does not affect those legally living or working there,” Popsoi stated.

He also addressed Moldova’s preparations for the upcoming presidential elections and referendum. “I underscored Moldova’s commitment to countering foreign interference aimed at destabilizing society, creating divisions, and undermining democracy through illicit financing, misinformation, and cyberattacks. With the support of our partners, we will overcome these challenges. The government remains firmly committed to strengthening democracy, economic resilience, stability, and advancing reforms for European integration,” he added.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized Russia’s ongoing threats. “We support a strong and sovereign Moldova, capable of resisting Russia’s threats. The Defence and Security Partnership strengthens our cooperation in countering disinformation and organized crime. We also welcome the Readmission Agreement, which enables the UK to expel individuals who violate migration laws,” Lammy stated.
In addition, the United Kingdom announced £5 million in financial assistance for Moldova’s health sector. “This funding will support healthcare initiatives, assist Ukrainian refugees, and bolster efforts to combat illicit financing and cyber security threats. We are pleased to support these critical actions,” Lammy added.
The visits by David Lammy and Luminita Odobescu to Moldova underscored their nations’ commitment to strengthening ties with Moldova. During the meetings, the officials reinforced their shared goals of fostering security, stability, and democratic development in the region.
