Moldova Appoints New Ambassadors to Serbia, Montenegro and Portugal. Who got the position?

Moldova’s Ambassador to Romania, Mihai Mitu, will also represent the country in Serbia and Montenegro on a non-resident basis. Meanwhile, Sergiu Gurduza has been appointed Moldova’s new ambassador to Portugal.

President Maia Sandu signed the decrees appointing the two diplomats on August 17.

According to the decree, Mitu will serve as ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro concurrently, with his residence remaining in Bucharest. A career diplomat, he has more than 20 years of experience in foreign relations.

Mitu has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at Moldova’s diplomatic missions in Sweden, the United States and Romania. He served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2022 and was appointed Moldova’s ambassador to Romania in January 2026.

Sergiu Gurduza will take over as Moldova’s ambassador to Portugal. He currently serves as Moldova’s Consul General in Istanbul and has more than 16 years of experience in justice, good governance and foreign relations.

Throughout his career, Gurduza has served as Deputy Minister of Justice, Principal State Adviser to the Prime Minister, a member of the Central Electoral Commission and an adviser to the Speaker of Parliament.

In 2025, he was awarded Moldova’s Order of Honour.
