On 27 January, the Republic of Moldova commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, which President Maia Sandu described in a public message as a tragedy whose memory still fills us with horror today.
“Six million Jews were killed simply because they were Jews, alongside Roma people, persons with disabilities, and others murdered solely because they were considered different. This tragedy began with hatred, exclusion, and complicit silence in the face of suffering,” the head of state recalled.
The president noted that in 2026, 85 years will mark the beginning of the Holocaust on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. She stressed that the country has no right to forget that terrible crimes were also committed here, and that people were deported, humiliated, shot, or left to die of hunger and cold.
Maia Sandu also announced that she is taking part in a ceremony dedicated to the memory of Holocaust victims in Strasbourg, organized by the Council of Europe.
In her message, the president emphasized that simple commemoration is not enough and that the phrase “Never again” must mean more than a slogan. She said it represents a daily responsibility for everyone to reject hatred, defend human dignity, and show the courage to speak out against injustice.
The Republic of Moldova has officially marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day since 2015.
