Moldova is providing energy to Ukraine! Parlicov: We aim to build 500 MW power plants

In an initiative of solidarity and mutual support, Moldova could potentially build several power plants to generate electricity for Ukraine, which is facing a severe energy crisis. Ukraine has lost 70% of its electricity generation capacity due to conflict-related damage, relying now primarily on wind, solar, nuclear, and hydro sources. This acute energy crisis has prompted the search for urgent and viable solutions.

The Minister of Energy of the Republic of Moldova clarified in an interview with Europa Libera that the plan is to position the power plants within Moldova’s borders to avoid the risk of attacks. “Any assistance, any megawatt, would be helpful for them. We are considering installing some plants in Moldova to protect them from attacks. Ukraine will also develop its capacities, but there’s no guarantee they won’t be targeted,” the minister emphasized.

In this regard, the Republic of Moldova proposes to install energy generation capacities within its territory, utilizing natural gas extracted by Ukraine, which it currently has no use for. The electricity produced will be supplied to Ukraine, which will only cover the maintenance costs of the generation facilities.

“In June, we discussed how and where to place these capacities, and now we are discussing the practical collaboration approach – whether the energy will be taken by the system operator in Moldova or Ukraine. Although Moldova has limited space for installing these generation capacities, the idea is to implement 500 MW infrastructure projects, with 300 MW potentially being installed relatively quickly, within one to one and a half years. The concept involves Ukraine covering the operating and maintenance costs of the power plants,” stated the minister.
