Moldova Launches Pilot Project to Support Roma Children’s Inclusion in Schools

Moldovan schools will introduce educational mediators to support the integration of Roma children into the education system. This initiative is part of a pilot project launched by the Ministry of Education and Research (MER) in partnership with UNICEF Moldova.

According to the MER, the first educational mediators will begin working in Otaci and Soroca—regions with particularly low rates of school inclusion among Roma children.

The project outlines that educational mediators will strengthen communication between schools, families, and communities. They will monitor school attendance and class participation, helping to prevent absenteeism, reduce dropout rates, and combat bullying. In addition, they will encourage parents to take an active role in their children’s education.

Speaking at the project’s launch, Ivan Duminica, Head of the Interethnic Relations Policy Service at MEC, emphasized that the Roma children’s inclusion is backed by public policies, strong partnerships, and effective monitoring mechanisms.

“Only through genuine collaboration between authorities, civil society, local communities, and international partners can we create an equitable and inclusive educational environment for all children,Duminica said.

The launch coincided with Roma History and Culture Week (April 2–8), culminating on International Roma Day, observed annually on April 8.
