Moldova Prioritizes Land Restoration and Irrigation Investments to Combat Desertification

The Government of the Republic of Moldova, through the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA), is actively implementing financial mechanisms that promote investments in irrigation systems and the efficient use of water resources. These efforts confirm that combating desertification and drought remains a national priority, given their impact on agriculture, the environment, and the economy.

“To support farmers in adapting to climate challenges, in 2023, 132 farmers received subsidies totaling 56.12 million lei through the post-investment measure Investments in Irrigation Systems and Equipment,” stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI). “In 2024, the number of applicants rose to 234, with funding requests reaching 117.71 million lei. Additionally, the AIPA is implementing a supplementary subsidy mechanism, Encouraging the Use of Irrigation Systems, which attracted 34 applicants this year requesting 11.3 million lei.”

The government has also provided direct support to farmers affected by extreme weather events. In response to the severe drought and heat in 2024, it allocated 100 million lei from the intervention fund to compensate 936 affected farmers.

Moldova Marks World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

Celebrated annually on June 17, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought gains particular relevance for countries like Moldova.

The 2025 campaign, under the global slogan “Restore the Land. Reap the Benefits,” highlights the importance of land restoration in creating jobs, ensuring food and water security, supporting climate goals, and boosting economic resilience. This year’s international objective aims to restore 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land and ignite a trillion-dollar restoration economy by 2030.

Moldova joined the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 1998, committing to policies and actions that address environmental challenges using an integrated approach.
