Moldova Seeks EU Membership Alongside Ukraine, Says Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi

Moldova aims to join the European Union together with Ukraine, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi declared today during a joint press conference with Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Toiu in Chisinau.

Popsoi highlighted Ukraine’s role as a protective shield, stating that it has defended Moldova “for more than three years from the fury of the aggressor.”

“We support Ukraine not only through humanitarian aid but also through the generosity shown by Moldovan citizens during the refugee crisis. These actions have earned Moldova recognition as a small country with a big heart. Our openness and generosity are valued both in Chișinău and across European capitals. We firmly believe that by continuing on this path, we will join the great European family together, ensuring stability, peace, and prosperity throughout the region,” Mihai Popsoi said.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Toiu stressed the importance of evaluating each country’s progress on its own merits during the EU accession process.

“It must be very clear that Moldova has made extraordinary progress, recognized by EU member states. Ukraine has also advanced significantly. Based on the merits of each country, we must find a solution by the end of this year to open negotiations. We believe technical grounds exist to open several negotiation clusters within this year,” she said.

Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022, followed by Moldova in March 2022. Both countries received candidate status in June 2022, and accession negotiations officially began in June 2024.
