Wines from the Republic of Moldova continue to stand out internationally, winning a total of 119 medals at the spring edition of the prestigious MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting held in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany. According to the organizers, Moldovan wines received one Grand Gold medal — the highest distinction awarded in the competition for wines with an exceptional profile — along with 75 gold medals and 43 silver medals.
Producers from Moldova participated with the support of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV), which facilitated the presence of 33 Moldovan wineries at the international competition. Representatives of the institution said these results strengthen the visibility and reputation of Moldovan wines on the global market.
The MUNDUS VINI competition is organized by Meininger Verlag and is considered one of the most important wine contests in the world. During the event, an international jury composed of oenologists, sommeliers, traders and specialized journalists evaluates thousands of wine samples through blind tastings.
The blind tasting system guarantees objectivity in the judging process, and the award winning wines gain recognition for their quality, complexity and distinctive character.
The wine sector remains one of the most important branches of Moldova’s economy, and wine exports continue to play a significant role in promoting Moldovan products on foreign markets. In recent years, the industry has recorded steady growth in both export value and the diversification of sales markets.
According to recent sector data, in 2024 exports of wine products from Moldova reached a record level of more than 235 million dollars, the highest value registered in the last decade. Compared with the previous year, export revenues increased by about 22 percent, confirming the strengthening position of Moldovan wines on the international market.
In total, Moldova exported about 144 to 145 million liters of wine and other wine products to 73 countries worldwide in 2024. A key trend in recent years is the stronger focus on bottled wines, which account for more than 65 percent of total exports and provide higher added value for producers.
The European Union remains the main destination for Moldovan wines, with roughly half of exports going to European markets. At the same time, producers continue to expand their presence in markets across North America, Asia and other regions, contributing to the growing international visibility of the Wine of Moldova brand.
Data for 2025 show a mixed trend in exports. In the first seven months of the year, Moldova exported about 73.15 million liters of wine, around 12 percent less than in the same period of the previous year. However, the value of exports declined by a much smaller margin, reaching approximately 122.4 million dollars, reflecting the sector’s shift toward higher value products and premium markets.
Overall, Moldova’s wine industry continues to develop, supported by modernization in production and the international promotion of local wines. Recent results confirm that wine remains one of Moldova’s most competitive export products and an important economic and cultural ambassador of the country worldwide.
