Moldova to be Represented by Five Students at FIRST Global Challenge in October

During the current period of October 6-10, a team of five students will represent our country at the World Robotics Olympiad – FIRST Global Challenge. This year’s competition theme, “Hydrogen Horizons,” encourages teams to envision the planet’s future energy and propose sustainable ways of utilizing renewable resources.

The Republic of Moldova will be represented at the event by a team of five students, composed of:

  • Nicolae Èšurcanu, a student at “Prometeu ProTalent” High School in ChiÈ™inău;
  • Cristian Romanciuc, a student at “George Meniuc” High School in ChiÈ™inău;
  • Sanda Bostan, a student at the International School in Georgia;
  • Adrian Bandalac, a student at “N. Iorga” High School in ChiÈ™inău;
  • Vladimir Corduneanu, a student at “Mihai Viteazul” High School in ChiÈ™inău.

The students have already built their robot for the competition and presented it to the Minister of Education.

The competition will take place in Singapore and will bring together teams from over 160 countries around the world. Its main purpose is to promote the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and the organizers present real engineering challenges to the teams.

Throughout the years, the Republic of Moldova has achieved excellent results in the FIRST Global Challenge World Robotics Olympiads. In 2018, the Moldovan team earned a bronze medal. In the 2019 edition, our team secured three gold medals: the FIRST Global Grand Challenge Award, the Winning Alliance, and the Innovation in Engineering award. In 2022, our students earned a gold medal (for Innovation in Engineering) in the competition held in Geneva.

The continuous participation in the FIRST Global Challenge is supported by USAID Moldova, Sweden, and the United Kingdom through the Future Technologies Project (formerly the Competitiveness Project in Moldova), along with private partners.
