Moldova to Launch Auction for High-Capacity Renewable Energy Parks with Storage Batteries

Moldova will launch a new auction this autumn to build high-capacity parks for producing renewable energy, coupled with battery energy storage systems (BESS). Carolina Novac, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, presented the auction timeline during an economic forum in Chisinau.

The government plans to launch the auction in October 2025, with bid submissions open until March 2026.

Energy experts will conduct detailed system analyses and modeling to determine the size and capacity of the new parks. Preliminary estimates indicate the energy system will need storage batteries with a total capacity of 246 MW to maintain proper balance.

“The integration of battery energy storage systems will reduce import dependency, prevent economic losses and negative pricing, and increase grid flexibility,” said Novac.

The government closed the submission period on March 31 for its first auction aimed at building large-scale wind and solar parks, with a combined capacity of 165 MW. Authorities plan to select the winners by this autumn, with expected investments reaching up to €200 million.

According to official data, Moldova has significantly expanded its renewable energy sector. Over the past four years, the total installed capacity of renewable energy plants has grown eightfold, surpassing 646 MW as of February 2025.
