Moldova to Revise Nationalization Laws. Recean: Kremlin’s Agents Are Trying to Apply Pressure

Prime Minister Dorin Recean has instructed Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru to propose appropriate measures within three weeks to revise nationalization laws.

During a cabinet meeting held on December 30, 2024, Recean addressed political speculations in Chisinau about gas purchases from Russia and the alleged $700 million debt. He accused pro-Russian parties of attempting to shift the financial burden onto citizens.

“This is the first time politicians are blaming their own country for problems caused externally. The Kremlin’s political puppets are pressuring the government to transfer a non-existent $700 million debt to citizens. That money may have gone toward yachts and vacations, but certainly not toward the needs of Moldova’s people.

I foresee a staged show to present a so-called savior of the situation. Some are competing to be louder and more submissive. Socialists, including Dodon, are pushing Moldova to acknowledge this imaginary debt. I want to remind them this is not about politics or parties.

We are defending our country, patriotism, and dignity—or, as they call it, faith. We are preparing thoroughly to eliminate any blackmail tools. In this context, Madam Minister Mihailov-Moraru will review the nationalization laws so we can act against strategic assets seized through coercion and blackmail. We must reclaim what belongs to us,” stated Recean.

Starting January 1, 2025, Russia will stop delivering gas to Moldova. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, and rising costs for electricity and heating may follow as Moldova turns to alternative supply sources.

The Transnistrian region has also declared an economic emergency. Based on a decision signed by Vadim Krasnoselski, the Cuciurgan Power Plant may halt electricity supplies if the region runs out of gas.

Earlier, Russian media published reports claiming Moldova’s constitutional authorities planned to seize the Cuciurgan Power Plant by force and enforce a military scenario in Transnistria. However, Moldova’s government has dismissed these claims as Kremlin-backed misinformation.
