The Republic of Moldova will establish a consulate in Chicago, scheduled to open in the first half of 2025. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi announced the decision following discussions with John Bass, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, during a recent meeting in Washington.
The new consulate responds to numerous requests from Moldovan citizens residing in the United States. It aims to provide consular services, strengthen ties with the Moldovan diaspora, and enhance support for citizens in the region.
Minister Popsoi expressed gratitude to the U.S. for endorsing the initiative, stating:

“This allows us to expand Moldova’s consular presence in the U.S. I also discussed with John Bass the need to strengthen our Strategic Dialogue.
We agreed to launch a new phase in bilateral relations through negotiations for a Strategic Partnership, focusing on security, energy resilience, and economic development.”
After the meeting, Minister Popsoi thanked the U.S. for its consistent assistance, which has significantly improved living conditions in Moldova.
Minister Popsoi is on a working visit to Washington from December 2–9, 2024.
