Moldovan citizens will have a new identity document – identity card. What are the advantages?

Starting in 2025, Moldovan citizens will have a new identity document, the Identity Card, announced by the Public Services Agency (ASP).

“By March 31, 2025, a new identity card model will be introduced in the Republic of Moldova. This card, issued to Moldovan citizens, will meet EU technical and security standards and incorporate the holder’s biometric data,” stated the ASP.

Benefits of the new ID card for citizens:

  • Enhanced Access to Digital Services: Equipped with a built-in electronic data storage chip and a qualified electronic signature certificate, the new ID card allows holders to access online services without needing to visit service providers in person.
  • Remote Access for the Diaspora: Moldovan citizens abroad with an ID card can access public services remotely through Moldova’s digital government platform.
  • Seamless Authentication and E-Services: Identity card holders can authenticate on systems such as MSign, MPower, MPass, MNotify, MCabinet, e-Voting, and e-Declaration, among others, and can sign official documents, applications, or declarations digitally, eliminating the need for in-office visits.
  • Address Simplification: Residence information will no longer appear on the ID card, eliminating the need for address stamps with each change of residence.
  • Extended Usability: Beyond national identification, the new ID card can serve as a travel document in countries recognizing it, including future EU member states.
  • Access to the EU Digital Single Market: The ID card will support mutual recognition of electronic identification, signatures, and document services, enabling holders to authenticate and sign documents valid across the EU.
