Moldovan peacekeepers from the 20th contingent of the National Army have recently commenced their mission in Kosovo as part of the KFOR peacekeeping operation. In a formal handover ceremony at the multinational base “Camp Vilaggio Italia” in Pech, these soldiers officially assumed their responsibilities from the 19th Moldovan contingent.
During the ceremony, Regional Command-West’s superior, Francesco Ferrara, and peacekeepers from various nations, including Italy, Austria, Albania, and Northern Macedonia, witnessed the symbolic transfer of duties. Vsevolod Serdiuc, the outgoing commander of KFOR-19, handed over the flag and the operational responsibilities to Petru Tutunaru, who will lead the contingent for the next six months.
Comprising 41 professional soldiers, including seven engineers and a platoon of 33 soldiers, the 20th Moldovan contingent marks a historic moment with the inclusion of four female soldiers participating in the peacekeeping mission for the first time.

The responsibilities of the Moldovan peacekeepers encompass guarding and defending strategically important infrastructure, ensuring the security of the “Camp Vilaggio Italia” base, including the Visoki Dečani Monastery, and conducting engineer search and detection of explosive objects within their area of responsibility.
The Ministry of Defence notes that Moldovan peacekeepers have actively contributed to the KFOR peacekeeping mission since 2014, showcasing the country’s ongoing commitment to international peace and security efforts.
