Prime Minister Vasile Tofan will visit Ukraine at the end of this week to discuss potential cooperation on the natural gas market with officials in Kyiv. According to the head of government, negotiations are intensive, and the authorities are seeking solutions that serve the interests of both countries.

Speaking at the beginning of a Government meeting, Tofan noted that Ukraine is a natural gas producer with a surplus, which could create opportunities for cooperation with the Republic of Moldova. Other topics on the visit’s agenda will include energy, water, trade, and security.

The prime minister stressed that the authorities continue to seek alternative supply sources and the most advantageous contracts possible. In this regard, the Republic of Moldova is also holding talks with other countries, including Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Turkmenistan, to strengthen bilateral relations and identify mutually beneficial solutions.

The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are preparing a new energy cooperation agreement that could make Moldova an even more important link in supplying its neighbours with natural gas, electricity, and petroleum products. Authorities in Kyiv have announced that the two countries are working on a bilateral document that will establish priority areas for cooperation in the energy sector.

According to information published by the Ukrainian Government on October 14, the discussions focus on three main areas: natural gas transportation, the possibility of increasing electricity supplies to Ukraine, and facilitating the transit of fuel through the Republic of Moldova.
