Maestro Spiridon Vangheli has passed away. The writer’s son-in-law announced this on a social network, and the Ministry of Culture confirmed the information to realitatea.md.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing away of Master Spiridon VANGHELI, who brought joy and inspiration to the hearts of millions of children around the world. His literary legacy will live on forever, and his spirit will continue to enlighten future generations,” Ghenadie Contu wrote.
Spiridon Vangheli, also called “Gugutsa’s father,” turned 92 on June 14. The famous Basarabian writer was born in 1932 in Grinautsi, Balti county, today’s Riscani district. He is the author of the famous children’s book “Gugutsa’s Mischief.” Translators rendered it into about 40 countries and approximately 60 languages.

Spiridon Vangheli has won numerous national and international diplomas in his more than five decades of literary activity. In 1974, an international jury awarded him the Andersen Honorary Diploma in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and included his name in the list of the world’s best short-story writers.
The writer has also published several books, including The Little Boy in the Blue Hut, The Adventures of Gugutsa, Columbus in Australia, Gugutsa – Captain of the Ship, The Star of Little Tom Thumb, Gugutsa and His Friends, Children in the Shackles of Siberia, The Little Sparrow.
In 2012, Chisinau awarded the poet the title of honorary citizen.
