The 2026-2027 school year will begin with a special thematic lesson, “Independence That Unites Us,” in all public and private general education institutions across Moldova.

The lesson will take place on September 1, 2026, for students in grades I-XII and will mark the 35th anniversary of Moldova’s declaration of independence.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the lesson will give students an opportunity to learn about Moldova’s path to independence, reflect on the country’s transformations over the past 35 years and discuss the role of each generation in shaping Moldova’s present and future.

Educational activities will focus on three main areas: “The Road to Independence,” “Symbols and Values of Independence” and “Independence That Unites Us.”

Students will explore key events from 1989-1991, the Declaration of Independence and major transformations Moldova has undergone between 1991 and 2026. The lessons will also highlight state symbols, the Romanian language, Moldova’s historical, cultural and natural heritage, as well as the values underpinning a democratic society.

The Ministry said teachers will place particular emphasis on understanding independence not only as a historical event but also as a responsibility shared by every generation. The lessons will address values such as responsible freedom, human dignity, peace, solidarity, integrity, civic participation, justice and the rule of law.

Students will also be encouraged to consider questions such as what independence means today, how people can build independence together, how each individual can contribute to the country’s development and how the younger generation sees Moldova’s future.

To help teachers organize the lesson, the Ministry of Education and Research, with support from the Council of Europe, has prepared teaching materials adapted to different age groups and education levels. The materials include suggested activities and learning tasks that teachers can adapt to the circumstances of each class and community.

Teachers will also be able to attend workshops dedicated to organizing the first thematic lesson, where they will receive guidance on the materials and ways to use them in the classroom.

The “Independence That Unites Us” lesson is part of activities marking the Decade of Education for National Values. It aims to create a space for intergenerational dialogue at the start of the new school year, encourage reflection on shared values and promote responsibility for Moldova’s future.

Moldova will celebrate the 35th anniversary of its independence on August 27. The anniversary will be marked by military parades, events in central Chisinau and flower-laying ceremonies.
