The situation on the Dniester River remains serious, and authorities must work together to manage the effects of the river’s declining flow, PAS MP and former Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu has said.
Lazarencu called on central authorities and Chisinau City Hall to put political disputes aside and focus on practical solutions.
“We need to work together with Chisinau City Hall. Political accusations do not bring us rain,” Lazarencu said during the “Rezoomat” programme on Realitatea TV.
According to the MP, the government, public authorities and local administrations must coordinate their efforts to ensure that water can continue to be collected even if the river level falls further.
“We are monitoring the situation at the ministry, within the government and in local public administration so that we can collect water even at lower levels,” Lazarencu said.
He noted that particular attention has been focused on the Dniester because the river supplies approximately 80 percent of Moldova’s water consumption.
At the same time, the former environment minister stressed that the problem is not limited to the Dniester, with the hydrological situation also difficult in other parts of the country.
Lazarencu also said the river’s flow has decreased significantly. He referred to a decline from approximately 21–22 cubic meters per second to around 4.5 cubic meters per second.
