Moldova’s Parliament could return from its summer recess for an extraordinary session from August 20 to 26, following a request by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. The proposal is due to be considered by the Permanent Bureau.

The extraordinary session is intended to prioritize the adoption of a package of legislative acts related to Moldova’s commitments under the EU accession process and included in the country’s National Programme for Accession to the European Union.

A total of 36 draft legislative acts have been proposed for the plenary meetings scheduled for August 24 and 25, 22 of which carry the EU integration designation. The proposed agenda is expected to be approved by the Permanent Bureau on Thursday, August 20.

The bills cover several areas of public interest, including the legal and institutional framework, management of financial instruments, digitalization, infrastructure, the electoral system, as well as the social, economic and media sectors.

Moldovan MPs are currently on their parliamentary recess, which officially began on August 1 following the end of the spring session. Parliamentary committee work and plenary meetings normally resume in early September with the autumn session.

However, Parliament can be convened for extraordinary meetings during the recess at the request of the Parliament Speaker, the President of Moldova, or at least one-third of MPs.
