On the day of Gheorghe Urschi’s funeral, a national day of mourning will be declared in the Republic of Moldova, announced President Maia Sandu.

The head of state sent a message of condolences to the artist’s family and to all those who admired him, highlighting his cultural impact.

“Entire generations grew up and found themselves in his humor, in the performances and monologues through which he brought light and truth to the stage. He made an entire country laugh, and now leaves behind a whole country in tears,” Maia Sandu said.

She also emphasized that Urschi’s work reflected deep love for people and national values.

“He knew how to speak about our pains and achievements with sincerity and wit. A free spirit, yet profound in his observations, he managed to bring people not only smiles but also hope. Our country remains grateful for the joy he gave, through his talent, to so many generations,” the president added.

To honor his memory, authorities will declare the day of his funeral a national day of mourning.

The family announced the passing of Gheorghe Urschi on April 13. The artist had been hospitalized for more than a month in serious condition following surgery at the beginning of March.
