NATO has increased its defense spending. Allies discussed at the summit about the parliamentary elections in Moldova

At the Hague summit, the heads of state and governments of NATO member countries approved an increase in defense spending and reaffirmed their mutual commitment to collective defense in the event of an attack, IPN reports.

During a press conference, Romanian President Nicusor Dan reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine, emphasizing that Ukraine’s security is “inseparable from the security of NATO’s entire eastern flank.” He also highlighted the importance of Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for September 28.

“The summit concluded with a declaration built around four main points,” President Nicusor Dan stated. “First, it reaffirms transatlantic unity, which implicitly means continued American presence in Europe. Second, after extensive debate in recent months, we agreed to increase financial contributions, reaching a target of 5% of GDP by 2035.”

He explained that the third point calls for transforming those funds into real military capabilities and stresses the need for NATO members to cooperate to achieve this goal. In that context, President Nicusor Dan said Romania had requested that non-EU NATO allies also gain access to EU defense funding mechanisms.

Finally, he noted that NATO leaders reaffirmed their unified support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian military aggression.
