New passport models for citizens of the Republic of Moldova will be launched no later than December 31, 2026, according to a draft developed by the Public Services Agency of Moldova with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova.

The new documents will include contactless electronic chips, personalized data, and advanced security features aligned with international standards to prevent forgery and enable the use of automated border control gates.

The passports will follow the international format, contain 34 pages, and include a polycarbonate data page with the holder’s identification details. The cover will feature the State Coat of Arms, inscriptions in Romanian, English, and French, as well as the international symbol for an integrated circuit document.

The data page will include the holder’s photograph, handwritten signature, and personal information such as surname, given name, citizenship, date and place of birth, sex, and identification number. It will also indicate the issuing authority, validity period, and feature a machine-readable zone (MRZ) for border scanning. The document series and number will consist of two letters and seven digits, perforated throughout the pages.

A key component will be the contactless electronic chip, which will store the holder’s data in digital format, including a color facial image and, where applicable, fingerprints.

The passport will also incorporate graphic security elements such as traditional Moldovan motifs, images of flora and fauna, distinct background designs for each page, and advanced printing techniques aimed at preventing counterfeiting.

Diplomatic and service passports will comply with the same technical and security standards but will differ in cover color and document designation.

Travel documents issued to stateless persons, refugees, and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection will also be updated to meet the same modernized standards.

The new passport models will enter circulation once the necessary technical conditions for personalization and issuance are in place, but no later than the end of 2026.
