New inheritance rules have entered into force starting April 1 in the Republic of Moldova, giving heirs 12 months to decide whether they accept or renounce inherited assets, the IPN reports.

Under the amendments, heirs no longer need to submit a formal declaration in all cases to accept an inheritance. They can accept it either through a notarial act or by effectively taking possession of the assets.

The law also grants additional rights to the surviving spouse, allowing them to receive household goods necessary for maintaining the home, in addition to their share of the inheritance.

Authorities have introduced stricter rules for excluding heirs deemed unworthy. Courts will make all decisions in such cases.

When heirs cannot be identified or contacted, notaries will publish official notices. If no one responds within one year, heirs lose the right to inheritance.

The new provisions also strengthen protections for minors and vulnerable individuals. Guardianship authorities will intervene if heirs fail to express their choice within the legal timeframe.

The rules apply retroactively to inheritances opened after January 1, 2026.
