Romanian President Nicusor Dan stated that Moldova could join the European Union within three years, including the Transnistrian region. In an interview with Euronews Romania, he warned that pro-Russian forces winning the parliamentary elections could halt the integration process, similar to what happened in Georgia.

Dan also highlighted Russia’s interference in Moldova’s elections, including illegal financing of political parties and campaigns. He stressed that Russian troops in Transnistria pose a threat not only to Moldova, but also to Ukraine.

“It’s a technical issue. I believe Moldova can integrate into Europe with Transnistria, granting it a status similar to Gagauzia, with relative autonomy within the country. This way, the European Union’s border would include these two autonomous regions. Ukraine and Moldova currently follow a shared negotiation schedule. Hungary opposes Ukraine’s accession, which raises some difficulties, but I do not expect a decoupling soon because it would send a negative signal to Ukraine,” explained Dan.
