Numbeo has published the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world as of mid-2024.
The rating is formed based on information on consumer prices, real estate costs, and quality of life indicators. Numbeo uses prices in New York as a basis, automatically assigning it 100 points. Based on the total score of all criteria, the country receives a score and a place in the ranking, reports logos-pres.md.
This rating is headed by Geneva, Zurich, and New York itself. At the beginning of the year, Hamilton (Bermuda) held first place, followed by five Swiss cities, and then the Big Apple (New York’s most famous nickname).
Chisinau holds 152nd place in the world (out of 218) and 79th place in Europe (out of 92) with a total score of 35.8. Six months ago, with a score of 36.3, we ranked higher at 273rd (out of 370).

Chisinau scores lower than New York in four of the five index indicators. For example, in the rent column – only 11.4 (six months ago- it was 10.5), in the cost of living plus rent – 24.1, in the cost of food 32.5, in the prices in restaurants 27.5. The population’s purchasing power index now stands at 46.7, up from 36.6 six months ago.
The study’s authors estimate that the average monthly expenses per person in Chisinau, excluding rent, amount to approximately 11,758.3 lei.
Notably, the rating places the capital of Moldova above cities such as St. Petersburg, Kyiv, Minsk, and Odesa in terms of the cost of living. Lviv closes the list of European cities with an index of 25.8.
