Over 46,000 Moldovan Students and Teachers will benefit from the $54 Million School Renovation Project

More than 46,000 students and teachers across Moldova will benefit from improved learning conditions as dozens of schools undergo renovation. The $54.5 million investment will focus on energy efficiency upgrades and modernizing thermal energy supply systems.

Authorities launched the works today in Chisinau under the Sustainable Transition to Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM) Project.

Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu announced that the renovations will reduce energy consumption by more than 50% in the targeted buildings.

World Bank Country Manager for Moldova, Inguna Dobraja, highlighted that STEEM is the first in a series of energy efficiency projects supported by the World Bank in Moldova. She emphasized that the investments will help combat climate change and reduce energy poverty.

Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun stated that investing in school infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to building a modern, equitable, and sustainable education system. “Through this project, we’re not only improving learning conditions in dozens of schools—we’re directly investing in our children’s future,” he said.

Renovated schools will receive wall and roof insulation, new windows and doors, upgraded heating systems, energy-efficient lighting, and installations such as heat pumps, solar thermal collectors, and photovoltaic panels.

The project’s total budget is $54.5 million, including a $50 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and a $4.5 million grant from the Moldova Multidonor Trust Fund for Development, Resilience and Opportunities for Welfare (M-GROW).

The Moldovan Government, through the Ministry of Energy and UCIPE, will implement the initiative with support from the World Bank Group-managed M-GROW fund. Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom are among the founding contributors to the trust fund.
