The Parliament of Moldova inaugurated the spring session with a solemn meeting attended by President of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa, and Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu welcomed the Baltic dignitaries, who visited Moldova officially from February 2–4, and highlighted the profound transformations Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania achieved after joining the European Union in 2004: their economies grew significantly, GDP tripled, standards of living improved, and state institutions became stronger and more efficient.

“The Baltic States show clearly that accession to the European Union delivers tangible results for citizens. We have a clear and strong mandate from our citizens to lead Moldova into the European Union. Parliament and its deputies play a key role in this process: adopting reforms, strengthening democracy, and preparing the country for accession,” Grosu said.

During their speeches, the Baltic parliament leaders reiterated their unwavering support for Moldova’s European path.

President of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar said that Moldova demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in advancing democratic reforms and its European course, and Estonia firmly supports this effort. “We believe that Moldova’s future lies within the European family. Estonia understands the challenges of reforming institutions, strengthening governance, and building public trust. We are ready to share our experience as a partner willing to support, listen, and cooperate,” Hussar stated.

Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa emphasized that Moldova serves as an example for other EU candidate countries. “We believe the first cluster of negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine should start immediately to bring your country closer to completing accession negotiations by 2028. We also draw inspiration from your experience. This year, Latvia will hold parliamentary elections, and we will consider Moldova’s experience in preventing disinformation and external interference in elections,” Mieriņa said.

Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas noted that Moldova’s determination and consistency in European integration strengthened political will in European capitals to enlarge the EU. “Continuous reform progress is a strong argument for increasing EU financial support for Moldova, including for economic transformation and reintegration efforts,” Olekas said.

According to Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, the spring session begins in February and ends no later than the end of July.
