The Kremlin wants and is trying to undermine the referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The pro-Russian forces in our country are working intensively on this chapter. At stake are the parliamentary elections in 2025. The opinion belonged to the Bucharest-based political analyst Mihai Isac and was presented in the program “Rezoomat” on Tuesday, September 17, on RLIVE TV.
The foreign policy expert notes that while there is a sense of electoral tension in Chisinau, there is less dialogue among the pro-European forces.
“The stakes of pro-Russian forces are to undermine the referendum and the unity of pro-European political forces in preparation for the 2025 parliamentary elections. The danger of the Georgian scenario establishment in Chisinau is closer than we imagine, and it takes the intellectual capacity and political maturity of Moldovan politicians to understand the threat. We hope for greater cohesion within the pro-European political class in Chisinau, but often, individual egos— large or small—hinder meaningful discussions. We need a much more open dialog”, says Mihai Isac.

On the other side, former Moldovan ambassador to Romania, Iurie Renita, is convinced that the government needs to work more and better with pro-European forces so that the referendum result lives up to expectations.
“The government should be concerned about the pro-Russian forces radicalization, and the pro-European forces should become the government partners. (…) I also participated in the event “Pact for Europe,” although I was not a party member, there was also a representative of PAS, the ruling party. The obligation of a pro-European government is essential to dialog. What does the European Union mean? It means dialog, consensus, and identifying partners. In the current electoral context, the model must emphasize democracy and cooperation. It’s crucial to recognize your partners and identify your adversaries, whom we already know and can see,” says Iurie Renita.
Presidential elections will be held on October 20, the same day as the constitutional referendum on our country’s accession to the EU. Citizens will answer: “Do you support Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”
