Mihai Popsoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, held a meeting with Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission. The discussions focused on the next steps in Moldova’s accession process to the European Union and on regional security developments.

During the meeting, the head of diplomacy from Chisinau thanked the EU for its support in strengthening Moldova’s resilience, including through the implementation of the Security and Defence Partnership between Moldova and the European Union signed on May 21, 2024. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Moldova became the first country to conclude such a partnership with the EU, and the bloc later applied this model in relations with eight other states.

Popsoi also highlighted the importance of assistance provided through the European Peace Facility, which contributes to the modernization of the National Army, including improving the safety of Moldova’s airspace. The official reiterated the country’s interest in continuing to benefit from EU support in the coming years.

The deputy prime minister also reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to aligning with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

“Support from the European Union helps us become stronger and more resilient in the face of current challenges and contributes to maintaining the pace of the integration process. Our country deserves its place in the European family and is gradually strengthening its capacities to actively contribute to European security. Together with our partners, we are building a safer and more prosperous Moldova,” Popsoi said.

For her part, Kaja Kallas welcomed the progress Moldova has made on its European path and reiterated the EU’s support for strengthening cooperation in security and defence to enhance the country’s resilience and the safety of its citizens.

Popsoi is visiting Brussels on March 10-11, where he is scheduled to hold several meetings with European and Euro Atlantic officials. He is also expected to meet Mark Rutte at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and participate in a meeting of the North Atlantic Council in the format of the 32 allies plus the Republic of Moldova.
