President Iohannis and Chancellor Scholz Pledge Support for Moldova

Romania and Germany are ready to offer support to the Republic of Moldova in the areas of reform, economy, energy, and defense. Moldova became one of the central topics of discussion between Iohannis and Scholz in Bucharest.

“We share a common vision with regard to the strategic benefits of expanding towards the East of the Union. We highlighted the support that Romania provides for the European progress of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. (…) Our discussions also focused on the possibilities of increasing Romania’s and Germany’s support for eastern partners, both at the level of the European Union and within NATO, especially for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. I emphasized, in particular, that it is very important to substantially support the stability and resilience of the Republic of Moldova in the face of security challenges, including in the energy sector,” said Iohannis after the meeting.

The Romanian president spoke about the fact that Bucharest will support Chișinău as much as needed. According to him, Romania is concerned about what is happening in the Republic of Moldova and how it is affected by the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

In turn, the Chancellor of Germany noted that Berlin already has a partnership with Chișinău, which will continue. He also spoke about the energy problems of the Republic of Moldova, pointing out that we need to become less dependent in this area.

“I believe this is much more than a symbol, it is an expression of an existing partnership in reality. We will continue. Romania plays an important role. We in Germany can only help. It is normal to be able to help the Republic of Moldova no longer depend on gas and energy from elsewhere. Much has been done, and this must be taken into account in the future,” said Scholz.

The two leaders are scheduled to have a trilateral meeting with Maia Sandu later in the afternoon.
