President Maia Sandu Accuses Kremlin-Oligarch Alliance of Undermining Moldova’s EU Path

President Maia Sandu has warned that the Kremlin and Moldovan oligarchs are actively collaborating to derail the country’s European integration and democratic reforms. Speaking on Secretele Puterii on JurnalTV, Sandu stated that this alliance seeks to trap the Republic of Moldova in a geopolitical “gray zone,” thereby undermining transparency, the rule of law, and national security, IPN reports.

“The Kremlin, in alliance with Moldova’s oligarchs and corrupt actors, shares one goal: to stop Moldova’s development and its path toward EU membership,” said Sandu. “Neither side wants transparency or the rule of law. Their strategy is to keep Moldova in a gray zone. If power shifts toward Russian influence, Russia could use our country against Ukraine, which would also increase security risks for us.”

Sandu accused the oligarchs of pursuing personal interests by trying to drag Moldova back into a corrupt past. “For thieves and oligarchs, the goal is to rewind time and continue extracting money from Moldova. They don’t know any other way to make a profit—they only know how to steal from citizens and the state,” she said.

The president also expressed concern about electoral manipulation. She claimed that the Kremlin backs a significant number of so-called independent candidates running in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“These so-called independents are being pushed to create media noise, reduce public trust in institutions, and attack democratic political actors. The goal is to sow confusion and disorient the electorate,” Sandu warned.

Following a meeting of the Supreme Security Council on Wednesday, Sandu cautioned the public about a wide range of potential election threats, including electoral corruption, illegal party financing, disinformation campaigns, paid protests, and cyberattacks—all allegedly orchestrated to manipulate the outcome of September’s parliamentary elections.
