President Maia Sandu met with Christopher W. Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Eastern Europe and Policy and Regional Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the United States Department of State, as reported by the presidential press service.
President Sandu underscored the longstanding and robust bilateral partnership between Moldova and the United States, expressing gratitude for the consistent support provided to Moldova and its citizens by the U.S. Government. She reiterated Moldova’s dedication to ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing the country and advancing its path toward European Union accession, emphasizing the significance of U.S. support for these initiatives. Additionally, President Sandu commended the collaborative efforts to combat corruption and resist forces seeking to undermine democracy in Moldova.
The discussions also touched upon regional security, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to supporting Ukraine. Recognizing Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression as essential for the peace and stability of Moldova, they emphasized the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
