President Maia Sandu urges citizens to save energy: “Small changes in our daily habits can have a big impact”

President Maia Sandu called on citizens to save energy amid the ongoing crisis. She assured the public that Moldova would successfully navigate the winter challenges.

Maia Sandu acknowledged that energy prices were a significant concern for many but emphasized the government’s efforts to secure electricity and gas supplies. Additionally, she assured low-income households that they would receive financial assistance with their bills. “We can all contribute to easing the situation. Small changes in our daily habits can have a big impact—they help us save energy and reduce costs,” the president stated.

She suggested several energy-saving practices:
– Reducing energy use during peak hours (7:00–11:00 in the morning and 18:00–23:00).
– Avoiding the simultaneous use of multiple electrical appliances.
– Turning off lights in unoccupied rooms.
– Unplugging devices when not in use.
– Lowering air conditioner temperatures by one degree.

The president expressed confidence in the country’s resilience. “Together, we will overcome this winter. Moldova has always shown its strength when united,” she emphasized.

As of December 16, Moldova entered a 60-day state of emergency. The government initiated this measure because Gazprom might suspend natural gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region, potentially causing a humanitarian crisis. This scenario also poses risks to the operation and stability of Moldova’s energy sector.
