Pride for Moldova: Our athletes won 7 gold medals at the European Shotokan Karate Championship

The Republic of Moldova won seven gold medals at the 14th edition of the European Shotokan Karate Championship. The event took place in the city of Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. The National Olympic and Sports Committee of the Republic of Moldova made the announcement.

Moldovan athletes earned four of the seven gold medals in the senior category.

“All four were claimed by the married couple Vitalie and Anastasia Spinu, originally from Balti. They won in both ippon shobu and sanbon shobu events. The athletes earned the other three medals in the youth and junior categories,” the Committee reported.

Shotokan is a style of karate that Gichin Funakoshi introduced and practiced in Japan. It was the first style taught in Japan in 1922 and the first to spread to Europe and America through Japanese instructors. Today, it remains the most well-known karate style worldwide.
