Prime Minister Dorin Recean met today with Anne-Marie Deutschlander, the new representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Moldova, to discuss the social integration of Ukrainian refugees who have chosen to stay in the country. The officials emphasized strengthening the state’s preparedness and emergency response capacity.
The Prime Minister praised the UN agency’s efforts in developing effective tools to protect those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Recean highlighted the government’s ongoing focus on humanitarian programs, facilitating refugee employment, and integrating refugee children into the education system.
Recean also raised concerns about a potential humanitarian crisis in the Transnistrian region if Russia halts gas supplies. Such a crisis could affect approximately 300,000 Moldovan citizens in the region, leaving them without gas, electricity, or sufficient resources to purchase essential goods.
