Romania’s Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan answered questions from RFI journalists on Tuesday, January 27, during a discussion that also covered sensitive issues of foreign policy and bilateral relations. Journalists asked the Bucharest leader about statements made by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who said she would vote “yes” in a possible referendum on reunification with Romania, according to the Romanian press.

Ilie Bolojan welcomed Maia Sandu’s position and said it aligns with the stance she has maintained throughout her presidential term.

“It only confirms the attitude she has had throughout all these years as President of the Republic of Moldova,” the prime minister said.

Bolojan added that Maia Sandu has consistently worked for the development of the Republic of Moldova and its rapprochement with the European space.

“This attitude confirms everything she has done in this position, doing everything possible for Moldova to develop, to be a safe country, a European country,” Ilie Bolojan said.

The Romanian prime minister stressed that this European path implies a close connection with Romania.

“And this means, first and foremost, a road to Europe through Romania,” he added.

Asked whether he would vote in favor of reunification with the Republic of Moldova if a similar referendum were held in Romania, Ilie Bolojan gave a clear answer.

“If such a referendum were held in our country, I would vote yes,” the prime minister said.

Bolojan also recalled that other Romanian political figures have expressed similar views in the past. Previously, Nicusor Dan also stated that he would vote in favor of reunification with the Republic of Moldova if a referendum on the issue were organized.
