Moldovans holding dual citizenship increasingly face problems at the border, where Romanian authorities stop them and confiscate their Romanian identity cards, citing fictitious residence addresses as the reason.

The Realitatea team spoke with a young man who experienced this situation firsthand. The report documents the case of Petru Dari and the bureaucratic difficulties he encountered after authorities seized his documents.

In recent months, the Romanian press has repeatedly warned about the issue, reporting that thousands of Moldovan citizens have lost their Romanian identity cards at border checkpoints after officials invalidated the documents due to allegedly false residence information.

According to the latest data published by media outlets in Bucharest, Romanian authorities ordered 70,860 residence cancellations in 2025 alone, bringing the total number of such cases to 143,831 by mid-November.
