Several residents of Comrat District reported last week the poor condition of the landfill near Comrat, claiming that the site is left without proper supervision or effective management measures. Residents say leachate from the landfill could be affecting groundwater, creating a real risk of pollution and contamination of water sources.
According to petitions submitted to the National Environmental Guard, residents accuse the authorities of showing “total indifference toward citizens and the environment” and say the problem has persisted for a long time.
The petitioners are calling for an urgent solution and for an economic operator or responsible entity to be appointed to manage and address the situation at the landfill near Comrat.
“Several complaints were received by the National Environmental Guard this week regarding the landfill near Comrat, which has allegedly been left unattended and without any responsible party. This shows total indifference toward citizens and the environment.
Aware of the water crisis in Comrat District, local residents have repeatedly contacted the relevant authorities, but no measures have been taken. We appeal to Igor Grosu, Vladimir Bolea, Vladimir Iosif, Gheorghe Hajder, Dorin Poverjuc, the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova, and the Embassy of Sweden in Bucharest to identify a solution or an economic operator capable of addressing and resolving the problem at the landfill,” the National Environmental Guard said.
