Authorities issued RO-Alert messages for residents of Tulcea County, Romania, after Russia carried out overnight attacks on April 30 to May 1 on targets in Ukraine, near the Romanian border.

Romanian media reported that surveillance systems detected a group of nine drones heading toward Ukrainian airspace, without entering Romanian airspace. Authorities also reported explosions in Izmail and Kilia, on the Ukrainian bank of the Danube.

“As a result of detecting a group of nine drones heading toward Ukrainian airspace, the National Military Command Center (core) notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations to implement population alert measures in the northern part of Tulcea County. Authorities sent an RO-Alert message at 03:36. Surveillance systems did not detect radar signals in national airspace. Explosions occurred on the Ukrainian bank of the Danube, in the areas of Izmail and Kilia,” the Romanian Ministry of National Defense stated.

Authorities lifted the air alert around 04:00, shortly after introducing it during the night.

The Tulcea Inspectorate for Emergency Situations also reported that residents contacted emergency services after receiving the alert.

“Following the RO-Alert message issued during the night, around 03:36, for the northern area of Tulcea County, which informed citizens about the possibility of objects falling from the airspace, two people called the single emergency number 112 to request additional information,” ISU Tulcea reported.

According to authorities, no violations of Romanian airspace occurred, but they applied the alert measures as a precaution due to the attacks near the border.
