Roberta Metsola said that the Republic of Moldova must determine its own future, commenting on discussions about possible reunification with Romania that some politicians have suggested as a “Plan B” if the country’s European Union accession process were to stall.

In an interview with NewsMaker, Metsola emphasized that, despite ongoing attempts to destabilize the country and spread disinformation, Moldovan citizens continue to support European integration. She recalled the recent visit of Moldovan President Maia Sandu to Strasbourg, where Sandu received the European Order of Merit, an award dedicated to the people of Moldova and their commitment to the country’s European future.

“Moldova must decide its own future. Last month, I had the pleasure of welcoming President Maia Sandu to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where she received the European Order of Merit, dedicated to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and their unwavering commitment to the country’s European path. Despite constant attempts to divide and destabilise society, including through disinformation campaigns, Moldovan citizens continue to choose a European future. We see and feel this determination, and my message to all those citizens is: we are right here, standing with you,” Metsola said.

Her comments come after Maia Sandu previously stated that she would support reunification with Romania if Moldovan citizens approved such a move through a referendum. The president noted that this option could become an alternative if Moldova’s European integration process were ever blocked.
