Officials in Bucharest welcomed Maia Sandu’s victory in Moldova’s presidential election, calling it “a clear testament to the will of Moldovan citizens to protect their democracy and secure their path toward joining the European Union.”
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis congratulated Sandu on her “historic victory,” affirming that “the Romanian people stand alongside the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in this success, which firmly anchors the country’s future within the European family.”
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu praised Moldovans for “making history” and showing their courage and commitment to a European future. “They fought determinedly against a powerful apparatus from Russia, which attempted to undermine democracy severely through widespread vote buying. Maia Sandu’s victory in the runoff is proof of Moldovan citizens’ resolve to defend their democracy and advance toward EU membership. It is a moment of pride and hope for all who believe in democratic values and a nation’s right to shape its destiny,” Ciolacu wrote.
