Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi emphasized in an interview with the CNN that the security risks generated by the Russian Federation’s aggression in the region remain high, as Russian drones continue to violate European airspace, including that of the Republic of Moldova.

When the interviewer asked whether Europe and NATO are responding firmly enough to these violations, the minister said that Western states have strengthened their response in recent years and are calibrating their approach more effectively.

“If there is one positive thing in all this tragedy we have gone through, it is the fact that the European Union and its member states have truly awakened to the threat posed by the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin,” the Moldovan foreign minister said.

He also stressed that EU member states and candidate countries such as the Republic of Moldova must increase defense investments to strengthen regional and global security.

“The investments in security and defense that the European Union, the member states, and candidate countries such as the Republic of Moldova are currently making will make us all safer; they will make the entire free world safer. And this is, certainly, a step in the right direction,” Popsoi told to the CNN.

The official reiterated that maintaining security and stability in the region requires a joint and coordinated effort, especially considering the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

As a reminder, Mihai Popsoi is conducting a working visit to Washington between December 1–9, where he is meeting with members of the U.S. Congress, representatives of the White House, the National Security Council, and the State Department. Discussions focus on deepening the Moldovan-American strategic dialogue, strengthening security cooperation, attracting American investments, and expanding collaboration in energy and sustainable development.
