Maia Sandu said that when she joined the government, she did not consider the position of minister to be a political role. She said that during her time in public service, several politicians disappointed her.

“I had quite a long experience as a civil servant. I worked with politicians and leaders of ministries, the government, and the country. Some were incompetent. Some were corrupt. I felt disappointed,” the president said.

In an interview with the British press, the Moldovan president said she joined the Ministry of Education to implement reforms and viewed the offer to lead the institution as a challenge she felt ready to take on.

She also said that she later discovered that some government officials had political affiliations, while others took part in corruption schemes.
