The Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) announced that it will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after the High Court of Justice rejected the recognition of the parliamentary mandate of the alternative candidate on the lists of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), Svetlana Popa.
In a press release issued, the Socialists express outrage at the decision announced on Tuesday, January 16.
“For the first time in the history of the Republic of Moldova, the parliamentary mandate entrusted by voters to the Bloc of Communists and Socialists was not recognized as valid. As a result, the opposition faction will remain without a parliamentary mandate for a considerable period. However, the mandate of the candidate on the list of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) was approved by the Constitutional Court.

According to lawyers, the Constitutional Court did not present legally sound arguments, so the decision can be considered purely political, limited, whose beneficiary is Maia Sandu’s party.”
The mandate of Socialist candidate Sviatlana Popa, proposed for approval by the Central Electoral Commission, was rejected by the judges of the Constitutional Court (CC). The ruling was issued on Tuesday, January 16. Meanwhile, Ion Poya’s mandate was confirmed.
Judge Domnica Manole said that a separate opinion of Judge Volodymyr Tsurkan was formulated in this regard.
