The EU provides €1.25 million to support migration and asylum reform in Moldova

The European Union will provide €1.25 million to support the General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM). This funding will help the Ministry of Internal Affairs improve the management of migration, asylum, and the integration of foreigners.

The 18-month Twinning project will align Moldova’s laws and procedures with EU standards and launch the country’s preparation for implementing the New Pact on Migration and Asylum.

State Secretary Diana Salcutan met with the EU Delegation and representatives from Romania, Greece, and Sweden (the lead partner) to discuss the project’s goals.

Under this initiative, GIM employees will assess their institutional capacity, review Moldova’s alignment with the EU acquis, and receive recommendations for improvement.

They will also exchange best practices, participate in trainings, and use updated working guides to adopt modern solutions already successfully applied in other EU countries.

Authorities will also revise asylum procedures, particularly for vulnerable cases, evaluate reception and accommodation conditions, run simulations to test operational procedures, and develop mechanisms for interinstitutional cooperation.

These measures will improve foreign nationals’ reception and integration, strengthen Moldova’s ability to respond to high migration flows, and bring national legislation closer to EU requirements.
