Important news for citizens of the Republic of Moldova traveling to the European Union: starting October 12, 2025, the EU will launch the new Entry/Exit System (EES) — a modern digital mechanism that will automatically record every border crossing into and out of the Schengen Area by non-EU nationals.
Doina Pinzari, Communication Specialist at the Directorate-General for Human Resources of the European Commission, explained in a social media video that the new system will make border controls safer and more efficient, without causing delays for regular travelers.
“At every entry or exit from the Schengen Area, the system will store biometric data — fingerprints and a facial image — together with passport information. Renewing the passport will no longer help avoid the rules, as the system will recognize the traveler’s face and link the new passport to the old one,” Pinzari noted.
The EES aims to prevent attempts to extend stays beyond the legal 90 days within any 180-day period, ensuring better compliance with EU border rules.
Authorities say the system will enhance transparency, security, and efficiency in border management, while also making travel smoother and more predictable.
Moldovan citizens are encouraged to learn how the new system works and review the Schengen stay regulations before traveling.
