The First Highway Bridge over the Prut: Moldova and Romania Launch Historic Construction This Saturday

Moldovan and Romanian authorities will erect the first highway bridge connecting the two countries on Saturday, April 26. They will mark the occasion with a symbolic event held simultaneously on both banks of the Prut River.

The bridge will connect Zagarancea (Ungheni district, Moldova) with Golaesti (Iasi County, Romania) and form part of the A8 Highway. It is a strategic infrastructure project that links the road networks of both states.

Authorities will organize the launch as part of the “Bridge of Flowers” Festival, with the main venue in Independence Square, Ungheni. At 12:00 PM, the event will feature concerts with artists from both countries, a documentary exhibition on Moldova–Romania relations, aerial performances by “The Hawks of Romania,” and a traditional food fair with local products.

At 3:30 PM, officials from Moldova, Romania, and the European Union will officially launch drilling works on both sides of the Prut.

The bridge will form part of the Targu Mures–Iasi–Ungheni corridor and the future Ungheni–Chisinau motorway. It will be the first of five bridges planned across the Prut, with completion expected by 2030.

Organizers will also launch a visual design contest for artists from both countries. The winning design will appear on the soundproof panels of the future bridge.
